How it works

A straight answer, grounded in musicology.

Ky's own musicological analysis — our proprietary methodology, developed with musicologists and refined with them as the catalogue grows — compares the music: melody and bass line, chords, rhythm and drums, form and words. A recording is judged mainly on an automatic transcription, which can get notes, chords and words wrong; for a recording Ky also compares the music as recorded and, between recordings, looks for the same recorded sound in both. Fixed rules, not a language model, decide the result.

  1. Drop

Songs or stems in MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AIFF, Ogg and more, or MIDI files from your DAW, AI music tool or notation app.

  2. Analyse

Ky's own method compares each file with the catalogue, and reports what it finds in common.

  3. Read

One of four plain verdicts, what is alike and where, how common that material is, and what to listen to next. Create a free account to see them, and download a similarity report (PDF) to keep or hand on.

Four verdicts, no scores

Plain words, and where to listen.

Every result is one of four plain verdicts. Under each sits what is alike and where, and how common that material is. Each check comes with a similarity report you can download as a PDF — the results, the passages, the numbers and the piano rolls, with the Results Disclaimer — to keep, or to show a musicologist or a lawyer. It isn't legal advice.

  • Clear

Nothing of note found in what Ky has.

  • Worth a look

Something resembles another work: a short or common passage, or an element such as the chords or rhythm. Have a listen.

  • Likely shared material

A long, uncommon passage lines up closely, or the melody, the words or several elements are closely alike, or, between recordings, the same recorded sound turns up in both.

  • Looks like a version

Most of the piece lines up with one work, or its melody and more are closely alike, as a cover or arrangement would be. If it's yours, that's expected.

Against the catalogue

Does my song resemble a catalogued work?

Ky checks each file against its catalogue and names the works it finds, with titles, artists and years where they're known. Most music ever written isn't in it, so “Clear” means nothing of note in what Ky has.

Against songs you bring

Does my song resemble these?

Compare your songs with a set you bring, even ones not in the catalogue, or every file in a folder with every other. Songs, stems and MIDI files alike.
